1. Philipp Rechten entry; Agnes Passenger Manifest, 2 June 1868, page 71, line 379; in the Germans to America, vol. 21, May 1868-September 1868; National Archives & Records Management northeast region micropublication, cabinet 52, roll 295.

The two pieces of ship manifest shown above are from the ship that Philipp, Sr. arrived on in 1868. The top piece shows the first page of the ship manifest and gives all of the information regarding the name of the ship and the date that it arrived. The quality of the document is rather faint, but the original is quite clear.

The second piece shows the actual entry of where Philipp was listed on the manifest and indicates that he was passenger no. 379, that he 56 years old at the time of his entry into the United States, that he was destined for New York, that he was a merchant by trade, and that he was staying in a cabin, not in steerage where many stayed who were of low economic means.

The date was taken from the 1900 census of his son Philipp. Upon discovering this date, the ship manifest was found in the book listed above. The ship's entry, with the year being correct, could only belong to the elder Philipp as the age of the son was only 11 years old in that year.
