6. Harry Parsons obituary, Glens Falls Star Post newspaper, Glens Falls, New York, 1928, page --, column --.
Harry Parsons, for more than twenty years an employee of the municipality, and one of the surviving members of the old St. Mary's band died at 6 p.m. yesterday at his home, 34 Roberts avenue. He was born in England seventy-four years ago. Mr. Parsons was well known and well liked and during his long service at City Hall his unfailing courtesy and good humor made him popular with city officials and others who visited the building.
He first entered the service of the muicipality in 1902 as custodian of Village hall, now City Hall, during the administration of Howard H. Pruyn as village president. He continued in that position until 1914 and later was employed by the street department until a few years ago.
In his younger days he possessed a splendid voice and was chorister of the Church of the Messiah.
Mr. Parsons came to the American continent in 1870 from Woolwich, Kent county, England. He performed different lines of work in Ottawa City until 1873 when he enlisted in the Garrison artillery during a rebellion in northwest Canada. He served until 187? when he was transferred to the Governor General's foot guards under the governor general of Canada. He continued with the foot guards under the Marquis of Lorne, who was married to the Princess Louise. He did guard duty at the home of the governor general and was discharged in 1880 when he came to Glens Falls.
Mr. Parsons is survived by two daughters, Mrs. M. E. Varney of Glens Falls and Mrs. T. B. Crane of South Glens Falls, and eight sons, Arthur of Staten Island, William, Samuel W., Fred J., and Thomas Parsons of Glens Falls, Harry Parsons of Dunellen, N.J., L.J.Parsons of Ballston Lake, Frank Parsons of Rome, and a brother William C. Parsons of Glens Falls.
Notes:
Henry and Frances Ellen Parsons were enroute to Canada along with Henry's brother and his wife, William and Mary when their first child, Arthur was born. This information is derived from Chester Theodore Parsons birth certificate, which indicates that his father, Arthur, was born "on the water." Several census forms indicate that Arthur's place of birth was "at sea." If all of the census forms and Chester Theodore Parsons' birth certificate is correct, they arrived in Canada in 1873, not 1870 as mentioned in the obituary. They remained in Canada for nearly 7 years. During this time, Frances Ellen birthed four more children. Soon after their fifth child was born in 1880, Henry, William and their families left for America. They settled in Queensbury, Warren County, New York.
