In 1850, Wilmer was only 11 years old and living with his parents, along with his siblings; Sylvester, 13; Hester, 10; Lydia, 8; and Elizabeth, 7. Wilmer's father was working as a laborer at this time.

By 1860, the only children in the Gilman household along with Joseph and Mary, were Wilmer and Elizabeth. Joseph, as well as Wilmer, were now working as clay laborers.
2. Wilmer Gilman household, 1870, U.S. census, Middlesex County, New Jersey, population schedule, Woodbridge Township, Woodbridge post office, page 40, dwelling 241, family 266.
By 1870, Wilmer had been married to his wife, Jane, for several years. Wilmer was "working in clay bricks," and Jane took care of their four children: Anna M. (4), John E. (3), Arthur (2), and William (9 mo.)

In 1880, Wilmer and his wife, Jane were living with his parents, Joseph and Mary. They now had six children: Anna M. (14), John E. (13), Arthur (11), Samuel (7), Mary E. (5), and Harriet E. (1). Both Wilmer and his father were working as gardners.
4. Wilmer Gilman household, 1900 U.S. census, Middlesex County, New Jersey, population schedule, Woodbridge Township, enumeration district [ED] 69, supervisor's district [SD] 4, sheet 5, dwelling 93, family 96.
By 1900, Wilmer and his family were living on Grover Street in Woodbridge. This census shows Wilmer living with his wife and children. He was working as a day laborer and his three sons, (Edward J. (32), Samuel (26), William (19), were working as carpenters. Minnie (25), Hattie (21), Foster (18), and Summer (16) were the other children still at home. Wilmer was working as a "day laborer" and his three sons (Edward, Samuel & William) were working as carpenters. Jane had given birth to 12 children total. Seven of her children were living at home, two were presumably married, Arthur being one, and three had not survived.
5. Wilmer Gilman household, 1910 U.S. census, Middlesex County, New Jersey, population schedule, Woodbridge Township, enumeration district [ED] 53, supervisor's district [SD] 3, sheet 4A, dwelling 56, family 57.
This census shows Wilmer listed as William (71), living with his wife, Jane (64), and children {Samuel (38), Mary E. (35), Harriet E. (33), William (31), Foster (29), and Summer (25)}. At this time Wilmer was working as a gardener, his three sons (Samuel, William, and Foster) continued to work as carpenters, while Summer was working as a clerk. This census indicates that 9 out of his 12 children were still living.
